 In April 1940 Boston Elevated Railways ordered 20 PCC cars from Pullman-Standard and the new cars arrived in Spring of 1941. There were built with left side doors which were necessary for operation at subway stations having platforms along the left side of the track. The new cars were also equipped with couplers to facilitate towing by older types of equipment. In March 1941 new cars, numbered 3002-3021, entered service between Watertown and Park St. subway station. Starting in June 1944 No. 3017 underwent a series of tests to improve the ventilation system for PCC cars. The original trolley base air duct was removed and a low monitor attached to the main roof of the car. After multiple-unit PCC cars had been delivered during 1944, cars 3002-3021 were transferred from Watertown to Arborway. In November 1944 they were placed in service on the Tremont Street line between Egleston Square and North Station which gave this class the nickname "Tremonts".
