Early in 1945 St.Louis Public Service Co. (acquired by National City Lines in 1944) ordered 100 PCC cars from St.Louis Car Co. Identical in many aspects to the 1600 series, built in 1941, the whole batch was delivered in the fall of 1946, numbered 1700-1799. When one the most important lines in the city, 40 Broadway was converted to bus in August 1956, many PCCs became surplus. The very high level of the maintenance of the system had helped to sell the PCCs to other properties. In May 1957 sixty six 1700s were leased to the San Francisco Municipal Railway and they were finally purchased in 1963. 4 additional 1700s were sold to San Francisco in 1961. Ten 1700s were sold to Shaker Heights Rapid Transit in 1959 and 19 cars were sold to Tampico, Mexico in 1961-1964. Available by Special Order |
